Before I started working with make up, I never really understood the importance of taking care of my skin. I’ve always had problematic skin, I got so frustrated with it that just after I graduated high school I started taking Accutane, which was recommended to me by my dermatologist, to try and help clear up my blemishes. I found that nothing worked and the Accutane had turned my skin upside, causing it now to be very dry AND acne prone (yes, believe it or not you don’t have to only have oily skin to be acne prone). I didn’t think I’d ever find anything to help. But once I started learning more about skincare and ingredients, I started understanding what works best with my own skin and what doesn’t. Yes, I will admit my routine can be a little elaborate for some, but all the products I use work in their own way to help my skin. So, today, I will be sharing with you my AM skincare routine for the summer time!
I usually start my routine with the Youth to the People Superfood cleanser. This cleanser has kale, which has vitamins C, E and K, these help to strengthen and brighten complexion, there is spinach in there which is cooling and rich in conditioning essential fatty acids and green tea which is an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. This cleanser is gentle enough for the morning, and leaves my skin feeling soft and clean.
TIP: I always use a face cloth when washing my face to rinse my cleanser off, it gives a gentle exfoliation and ensures you’re giving your skin a good cleanse without being abrasive.
For daytime exfoliation I usually go for a chemical exfoliant pad. Right now, I’m switching between two different products. Day to day I use the Sephora Collection Glow Peel Pads, they are retexturizing and smoothing. These guys have glycolic acid which is an AHA (Alpha hydroxyl acid), these acids help to break down the glue (keratin) that holds dead skin cells to the surface, they also have natural peptides which are tightening (anti-aging), and natural aloe vera which soothes the skin. The new Sephora Collection skincare products are all considered clean, meaning they don’t have any questionable ingredients in them like mineral oil, sulfates, alcohols, fragrances, and so many more.
In the summer I switch my exfoliation every few days to the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Glow pads, they disperse self tanner as they exfoliate your skin to give a streakless tan to match the rest of your body. These pads have AHA’s, just like the Sephora pads, and antioxidants which are extremely reparative and help to restore to and protect your skin.
As of right now I’m still looking for the perfect day serum, but right now I’m using the Becca Skin Love Glow Elixir, this serum helps to brighten, smooth and hydrate your skin. It uses molasses extract for brightening, a blend of honey, algae and peony extract to brighten and sodium hylauronate and licorice to hydrate. This serum also has antioxidants from blueberry, cranberry, reservatol and vitamin E to shield the skin from free radicals.
Honestly, I’m trying to power through my Fresh Lotus eye gel, it’s packed full of powerfulantioxidants, soft orange extract and Ginko Biloba that reduces puffiness and cucumber that helps to soothe the undereye. It’s pretty good but I’ve just been using it for so long that I’m ready to switch it up! If you have any eye cream recommendations let me know.
This is my favourite part my routine! A good moisturizer can make all the difference in how your skin looks and feels. I always look for my moisturizer to givw my skin optimal hydration and a glowing radiance. Right now I’m using up the rest of my Sephora Collection All Day Hydrator, this moisturizer uses hyaluronic acid and glycerin to pull water from the air and delivers it into the skin while retaining that moisture. It also has vitamins C and E, these vitamins increase the skins radiance and protects it from environmental stressors.
The next moisturizer I have ready in my arsenal is the Marc Jacobs Youthquake Hydra-full Retexturizing gel crème, this moisturizer has sodium hyaluronate, this is a molecule of hyaluronic acid which also pulls in hydration and retains it into the skin and it gently exfoliates the skin using pineapple enzymes, a chemical exfoliant that eats away at dead skin cells — just like little Pac-men.
To protect my skin, I use a combination of two Drunk Elephant products. I use their D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops, this product adds a subtle bronzing to the skin so it’s ideal when you want a little colour. You can mix it in with foundation to make it a shade or two darker, or add to you SPF or moisturizer to give you a bronze without the added coverage. The sunshine drops use chronopeptides that actually mimic the reparative aspects of vitamin D which also improves cell growth. D-Bronzi also has black currant seed oil and marula oil to promote a healthy skin barrier. The antioxidants in this product boosts skin defense against harmful UV rays which makes this product great for summer!
I always mix my D-Bronzi with Umbra Sheer physical SPF 30. The physical SPF actually creates a barrier between your skin and harmful UV rays which delivers optimal protection from the sun. The product also has sunflower sprout extract that helps to neutralize free-radicals, therefore it also protects the skin from harmful agents that can fast-track aging.
I hope this little run down of my routine help you guys out! Just keep in mind that just because these products work for me, doesn’t mean they’ll work for everybody. If you have any skin care concerns you should definitely pop into your local Sephora, Shoppers Drugmart or your dermatologist!
